Sponsoring and Leading the Nan Tien Temple Oral History Project

To mark the 30th anniversary of Nan Tien Temple, HYEF sponsored and led the Nan Tien Temple 30th Anniversary Oral History Project to preserve the temple's spiritual, cultural, and historical legacy. Conducted under the guidance of the State Library of New South Wales, the project adhered to rigorous oral history and editorial standards to ensure academic value and archival integrity. The project documented 30 years of the temple's development through interviews with senior monastics, lay devotees, local leaders, and scholars, capturing personal stories and experiences that reflect Nan Tien Temple's role as a spiritual centre and hub for cultural exchange. Under the guidance of Venerable Man Ko, Chief Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Australia and New Zealand, and led by Venerable Jue Fang, the project engaged one staff member and more than 40 volunteers. In November 2024, the project was presented at the OHA Australia Biennial Conference, highlighting oral history as a powerful tool for cultural preservation. To ensure long-term access, HYEF also funded a dedicated digital database to house the temple's historical documents, as well as the project's recordings and transcripts for academic research and public reference. The collection has also been permanently archived by the State Library of New South Wales as part of its Oral History and Sound Collection, securing Nan Tien Temple's history as part of Australia's official historical record. During the Temple's 30th Anniversary celebration, Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon, State Librarian of the State Library of New South Wales, spoke about the Oral History Project and shared how deeply she was moved by the sincerity, serenity, and compassion she experienced through the Temple and its community. HYEF will continue to support such preservation initiatives, deepening the impact of Buddhist culture and ensuring that the spiritual legacy of the Temple benefits broader communities.
