In partnership with Deakin University, Western Sydney University, and Charles Darwin University, and supported by the Hsing Yun Education Foundation, Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Institute launched the Buddhism in Australia Research Project in 2024, with plans to continue through 2025. This initiative involves comprehensive field visits to document the historical development and cultural heritage of Buddhism in Australia since the nineteenth century. Led by Venerable Dr. Jue Wei, Director of the Humanistic Buddhism Centre of Nan Tien Institute, and Professor Anna Halafoff from Deakin University, the research team conducted their initial field study in Queensland during June and July 2024. They visited Bribie Island, examining the contributions of local artist Fe Yi'an, and engaged with the Chinese community in Cooktown. Between August and September, the team traveled to Darwin in Northern Australia and Broome in Western Australia, investigating local Cambodian Buddhist temples and the Darwin Chinese Association, while also participating in the Pearl Festival. The third field visit in December 2024 focused on southeastern New South Wales and Queensland, with visits to Pal Buddhist School, Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple, and Fo Guang Shan Chung Tian Temple. In February 2025, the team held their second advisory committee meeting to discuss a nationwide survey of Australian Buddhists. By April 2025, they explored Guan Di Temple in Launceston Tasmania, as well as Hoa Nghiem Buddhist Temple in Victoria and the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo. Research outcomes highlight the diverse expressions of Buddhism in Australia, demonstrating how Buddhist groups preserve traditional culture while actively integrating into local society through educational and charitable efforts.
